Tokyo: The Heartbeat of Japan
Our journey kicked off in the bustling metropolis of Tokyo, where tradition meets ultra-modernity in the most delightful way. First up was the legendary Tsukiji Outer Fish Market. Picture this: you’re surrounded by the freshest seafood imaginable, vendors calling out their wares, and the delightful aroma of grilled fish wafting through the air. It’s a food lover’s paradise! From sushi to sashimi, the culinary delights here set the stage for the gastronomic adventure that lay ahead.
Asakusa: A Step Back in Time
We then whisked our guests off to Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa, Tokyo’s oldest Buddhist temple, founded in the 7th century. As you stroll through the vibrant Nakamise Street leading to the temple, you can feast on traditional snacks like ningyo-yaki (tiny cakes filled with sweet red bean paste) and freshly made senbei (rice crackers). After soaking in the serene atmosphere of the temple, we rolled up our sleeves for a fun, hands-on cooking class where guests learned to make their own sushi. Talk about a delicious souvenir!
Kamakura: A Giant Among Us!
On our 15-day tours, we took a scenic trip to Kamakura. This coastal town is home to the iconic Great Buddha (Daibutsu), a stunning bronze statue that stands at a towering 13.35 meters! Guests were awestruck as they took in the grandeur of this ancient marvel, and many snapped selfies with this gentle giant.
Nikko: A UNESCO Wonderland
Next, we ventured to Nikko, a treasure trove of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The crown jewel? The magnificent Toshogu Shrine, the final resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. The intricate carvings and ornate decorations left our guests speechless. Did you know that the shrine is surrounded by some of the most stunning nature? Autumn colors made the landscapes sing!
Fuji: Nature’s Masterpiece
With our Highlights and Discover tours, we headed to one of the Fuji Five Lakes for breathtaking views of the mighty Mt. Fuji. Can you imagine standing there, surrounded by the vibrant reds and oranges of autumn foliage, with the majestic mountain looming in the background? It was a photographer’s dream come true!
Hakone: Art in Nature
Our October tour participants were in for a treat at the Hakone Open-Air Museum. Imagine wandering through a stunning outdoor setting filled with contemporary sculptures, all while enjoying the beautiful autumn weather! With works from artists like Henry Moore and Pablo Picasso, it was a feast for the eyes and a great way to appreciate art in a breathtaking landscape.
Nagoya: Hidden Gem of Japan
Next on our adventure was Nagoya, the fourth-largest city in Japan, which often flies under the radar of many tourists. This modern city is a delightful mix of history and contemporary culture. Guests loved exploring the city’s vibrant shopping districts, indulging in local delicacies like hitsumabushi (grilled eel over rice) and enjoying the friendly atmosphere.
Inuyama Castle: A Glimpse into History
On our September and October tours, we visited Inuyama Castle, one of Japan’s oldest surviving castles dating back to the 15th century. As guests climbed up the steep steps to the castle, they were transported back in time, imagining samurai warriors defending their territory. The panoramic views of the surrounding landscape were simply breathtaking!
Takayama: A Taste of Tradition
Our journey led us to the enchanting mountain village of Takayama. Guests were delighted to explore an Edo-era house, a journey into traditional Japan. We also visited a 300-year-old sake brewery, where guests learned about the sake-making process and enjoyed tastings of this beloved Japanese beverage. Oh, and did we mention the famous Hida Wagyu beef skewers? Pure bliss!
Nagano: Nature and Spirituality
As we continued our adventure, we explored the pristine beauty of Nagano and Kanazawa. Kanazawa is a city steeped in tradition, known for its gold leaf craftsmanship and stunning gardens. Guests were thrilled to visit Kenrokuen Garden, considered one of Japan’s three most beautiful landscape gardens. It’s the perfect spot for a tranquil stroll amid colorful foliage.
Zenkoji Temple: A Spiritual Retreat
Nagano is also home to the revered Zenkoji Temple, a 7th-century Buddhist temple that draws pilgrims from all over Japan. Each morning, the monks perform a beautiful ceremony at sunrise, chanting sutras and prayers. Guests felt the warmth of spirituality in the air, and many left with a sense of peace and fulfillment.
Matsumoto Castle: The Black Pearl
On our tours, we marveled at the stunning Matsumoto Castle. This 16th-century castle, known for its striking black exterior, is a true architectural masterpiece. Guests loved exploring the castle grounds and learning about its fascinating history, making it a highlight of our journey!
Kyoto: The Cultural Heart of Japan
No trip to Japan would be complete without a stop in Kyoto. This ancient capital is a treasure trove of history, culture, and stunning temples. We visited Ryoanji with its renowned rock garden, Kinkakuji (the Golden Pavilion), and the iconic Fushimi Inari Shrine, famous for its thousands of vermillion torii gates. Each site left our guests in awe, surrounded by the beauty of autumn foliage.
Private Geisha Dinner: A Night to Remember
One of the most memorable experiences was our private Kaiseki dinner with a Geisha. Guests enjoyed a multi-course meal, each dish a work of art, while engaging in delightful conversation with a Maiko (apprentice Geisha). Watching her graceful performances and participating in traditional games provided an authentic glimpse into Kyoto’s cultural traditions. It was a night filled with laughter, stories, and unforgettable memories!
Himeji Castle: A Fairytale Fortress
Our October tours included a visit to the iconic Himeji Castle, known as the “White Heron Castle” due to its stunning white exterior. This feudal-era castle is not only a UNESCO World Heritage Site but also one of Japan’s most beautiful. Guests wandered through the intricate defensive structures and explored the serene strolling gardens, feeling like they had stepped into a fairytale.
Hiroshima: A Journey of Reflection
