If you’re heading to Shinjuku with the little ones in tow, fear not! This vibrant area of Tokyo is packed with exciting activities that will keep your family entertained. While I haven’t listed Shinjuku as my top recommendation for family accommodations, it’s a bustling hub of activity, and if you’ve already booked a place here, you’re in for a treat! Shinjuku is conveniently located on the Yamanote Line, making it super easy to explore the rest of Tokyo.

Before we dive into the fun things to do, let’s talk about getting to Tokyo Disneyland or Tokyo DisneySea from Shinjuku. The best way is to hop on a train, which will take around 40 minutes, including one train change, and costs approximately 410 yen per person. Alternatively, there’s a bus from the Shinjuku Bus Terminal (near the New South Exit of Shinjuku Station) that takes about an hour and costs around 1000 yen per person. It’s a great way to start your adventure!

Now, let’s kick things off with a delightful breakfast spot close to Shinjuku Station: Sarabeth’s. This restaurant offers a charming Western breakfast and brunch experience. Coming from Melbourne, Australia, I found their breakfast reminiscent of an old-school café vibe from the ’80s. The quality was excellent, and the egg white and cheese omelette? Absolutely delicious! They even provide high chairs for the little ones and allow you to bring your own baby food. Just a quick note: there are multiple Lumine department stores, so make sure you head to Lumine 2 for Sarabeth’s!

Restaurant Location Opening Hours
Sarabeth’s 3-38-2 Shinjuku, 2nd Floor, Lumine 2 9 AM – 10 PM

If you have family members with serious allergies or gluten intolerance, consider the breakfast buffet at the renowned Park Hyatt Shinjuku, famously known as the “Lost in Translation” hotel. They take allergens seriously and clearly mark gluten-free options. This is an excellent choice for those with dietary restrictions!

Explore the Nature in Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden

When in Shinjuku, a visit to the stunning Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden is a must! This beautiful green space is perfect for a leisurely stroll or a relaxing picnic. Depending on the season, you can enjoy breathtaking cherry blossoms in spring, vibrant autumn leaves, and a serene Japanese garden with a charming teahouse. While there isn’t any playground equipment, the expansive lawns and gardens make it an ideal spot for kids to run around and soak up some fresh air. Just keep in mind that alcohol and sports equipment aren’t allowed in the park.

After exploring the gardens, you can grab a bite at a nearby sandwich shop called &Sandwich. Just a two-minute walk from the park entrance, it offers a cozy dining area and a selection of gourmet sandwiches, some vegetarian and vegan options included! They open early, making it a fantastic place to fuel up before or after your park visit.
